A Mid-Summer Reset: What to Do If Your Plan Isn’t Going as Expected

By this point in the summer, many families find themselves in one of a few places.

Maybe you started with a plan—and it’s been hard to keep up with. Maybe you intended to focus on learning, but haven’t gotten there yet.

You’re not alone.

Mid-summer is actually the perfect time to reset. Consider this plan:

1. Acknowledge that summer plans shift.

Summer rarely goes exactly as planned.

Schedules change, routines relax, and what felt realistic in May can feel harder to maintain in July. That doesn’t mean the plan failed—it just means it needs adjusting.

The important thing is recognizing that there’s still time to make the rest of the summer meaningful.

2. Identify areas of struggle.

Instead of focusing on what didn’t happen, take a moment to notice what’s still coming up.

You might see:

  • hesitation or frustration with reading or writing

  • difficulty staying organized or focused

  • resistance to summer learning

3. Determine what will make the biggest difference.

At this point in the summer, the goal isn’t to do everything.

It’s to choose one area that will have the greatest impact.

For many students, that might be:

  • building stronger writing skills

  • improving reading comprehension

  • reinforcing key math concepts

  • developing better organizational skills

Even a few weeks of focused effort in one of these areas can create noticeable progress.

4. Accept that small steps matter.

There’s a common assumption that if you didn’t start early, it’s too late.

That’s not the case.

Short, consistent work—even over a couple of weeks—can:

  • strengthen foundational skills

  • reduce frustration

  • prepared students as they head into the school year

The key is using the time intentionally.

5. Reach out for help
